TFI Co. makes shear blades, also called guillotine knives, for the shearing machines of steel fabrication and metalworking factories. We have made steel blades and machine knives since 1965 and have produced more than 12,000 of them. A single-piece blade can be up to 6 metres long, with no joints along the cutting edge.

Every blade is made to order. Tell us the size, the steel you cut and your machine, and we make the knife for it, install it, or regrind the one you have. Quotations are sent within 24-48 hours.

Why a single-piece blade

  • Precise cut. No seams, joints or steps: the cut is even and burr-free over the whole length.
  • Even stress. The force of the machine spreads evenly along the blade, so there is no joint that can break, a common problem with segmented blades.
  • Easier setting. The clearance between the upper and the lower knife is quicker and more precise to adjust.

Steel grades and hardness

A long, narrow blade needs the right balance between hardness, which keeps the edge, and toughness, which stops it from chipping. We choose the steel from the sheet you cut:

SteelBest forWhy
1.2379 (D2)Thin to medium sheetVery high wear resistance: the edge stays sharp for longer
1.2767Thicker plateHigh toughness and impact resistance
1.2344 (H13)Thicker plate or changing thicknessesHigh toughness and impact resistance

  • 1.2344 (H13)

Blades are hardened to 54-60 HRC, depending on the application and the sheet, and tempered two to three times to relieve internal stress.

How a long blade is made

  1. Forging and pre-machining. The steel is forged for an even grain structure, then milled to close tolerances, leaving just enough for the final grinding.
  2. Heat treatment without warping. Long blades hang vertically in vacuum furnaces while they are hardened, so they stay straight.
  3. Precision grinding. On long-bed magnetic surface grinders, the blade is kept parallel to within a few hundredths of a millimetre over its whole length. The cutting edge is ground with constant cooling so it keeps its hardness.

2 or 4 cutting edges

A blade with a rectangular cross-section has four cutting edges: when one edge is worn, the blade is turned or flipped and cuts again with a fresh edge. A blade with an angled (tapered) cross-section, often used as the upper knife, has two. More edges mean more cutting before the blade needs regrinding.

What they cut

Our shear blades cut mild steel (MS) and stainless steel (SS) sheet from 0.5 mm to more than 20 mm thick, with straight, clean edges. We build each knife to the size and hole pattern of your machine.

Installation and care

Our technicians install shear blades up to 3 metres long on site. The machine is switched off and disconnected first; the new blade is aligned with the cutting line following the machine maker's instructions, fastened securely, checked for straightness, and finished with a test cut.

To keep blades cutting well for longer:

  1. Clean the blades regularly to remove debris and build-up.
  2. Inspect them for wear, chips or cracks.
  3. Keep the edge sharp: regrind before it is badly worn.
  4. Rotate the blades to use a fresh edge and spread the wear.
  5. Keep them lightly oiled against rust and corrosion.

Regrinding and re-sharpening

A worn blade does not have to be replaced. We regrind shear blades up to 4500 mm long on CNC grinders with a magnetic bed and instant cooling, which keeps the hardness of the steel the same along the whole edge. In the UAE we collect the blades from your factory and bring them back reground.

Questions buyers ask

Are shear blades and guillotine knives the same thing?

Yes. Both names describe the straight knives of a shearing machine: an upper and a lower blade that cut sheet metal between them.

Why choose a single-piece blade instead of segments?

A single piece gives one continuous edge: the cut is the same along the whole length, the force is spread evenly so there is no joint to break, and setting the clearance is quicker and more precise.

Which steel is right for my machine?

For thin to medium sheet, 1.2379 (D2) keeps its edge longest. For thick plate or changing thicknesses, the tougher 1.2767 or 1.2344 (H13) is safer. Tell us what you cut and we recommend the grade.

How many cutting edges does a blade have?

A rectangular blade has four; an angled (tapered) blade has two. Turning the blade to a fresh edge spreads the wear and delays regrinding.

Can you make a blade from my drawing?

Yes. We make cold-work and hot-work shear knives to customer drawings, up to 6 metres long.

Do you re-sharpen worn blades?

Yes. We regrind shear blades up to 4500 mm long with instant cooling, so the blade keeps its hardness. In the UAE we collect and return them.

How fast do I get a price?

Within 24-48 hours after we receive the size, the material you cut and your machine details.
